Client Features
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) provides several client-side features that enhance the interaction between clients and servers. These features enable servers to request additional capabilities from clients, maintain context about filesystem roots, and coordinate sampling operations with language models.
Client Features Overview
The MCP specification defines several client-side capabilities:
- Roots: Expose filesystem roots to servers, allowing them to understand which directories and files they have access to
- Sampling: Request LLM sampling (“completions” or “generations”) from language models via clients
- Elicitation: Request additional information from users through the client during interactions
